The Role: Design Engineer

Bristol Water NM Contract

To work as part of the clean water renovations design team on the Bristol Water NM Contract on AMP6 work, delivering the agreed mains rehabilitation output.

The role is pivotal to work as part of the design team, taking on your own schemes and building a portfolio of projects, taking them from early identification of renovation need, to production of a complete, CDM compliant construction pack. The designer is the only key role to see all projects through its complete life-cycle, with monitoring through the construction phase and then management of the close-out process, where the newly laid mains can be handed back to the client and their systems can be updated (As-built drawings).

Key Responsibilities:
On a day to day basis, jobs will include (but are not limited to):
Following the agreed design process for each scheme, ensuring all gateways are met and communications recorded.
Production of budget quote pack.
Onsite walkthroughs / surveys of pipeline routes to ascertain information which will affect the design and construction - private land, traffic sensitive street etc.
Liaise with Highways Authorities, the Fire Service, and other third party stakeholders to obtain information on their needs.
Liaise with Utilities to obtain details of existing services.
Liaise with the various Client departments to obtain data relevant to the design.
Liaise with Construction Teams to ensure best practice design proposals, considering buildability.
Use of client mapping systems to assist with data collection to aid in designing a preferred rehabilitation solution.
To identify and develop cost efficient and constructible water main rehabilitation solutions, in line with client specifications and current industry standards (CEWSI, NJUG, Water UK WIS & IGN's)
Attend design, construction, site and client meetings.
Work as a member of the design team, being prepared to undertake all of the tasks supporting the design process.

Skills / Experience:
You will have experience of some (or ideally all) of the following:
Understanding of Clean water distribution networks.
Understanding of AMP periods and the water industry regulatory bodies (OFWAT, CC Water).
Knowledge and experience of clean water networks design or clean water hydraulic modelling.
Understanding of design solutions associated with water mains rehabilitation, such as no-dig technologies (pipe bursting, slip lining, directional drilling) and 'open cut' construction.
HNC, Degree or commensurate experience in the sector.
Understanding of the CDM Regulations.
The ability to work with CAD and produce drawings using different scales, multiple linetypes / styles and often imported images would be advantageous.
The ability to work as a team member and often to tight deadlines is essential.


Proficient in Microsoft Applications, Excel, Word etc.
Full Driving licence.
Strong communication skills.
Good communication skills, team player, punctual and reliable.
